Cigarette Butt Collection Competition Details, Terms and Conditions
Organiser: GreenSeas Trust, Registered Charity No: 1098649
Competition aim: To help clean up the waterfronts in the UK, specifically by collecting discarded cigarette butts, while raising awareness of the harmful effect of plastic pollution on our marine environment.
Participants: This competition is open to UK universities and colleges (each an “Educational Establishment”) and community groups that are not part of a registered charity (“Community Groups”) only. Students from an Educational Establishment should collaborate with other students from the same Educational Establishment to combine collected cigarette butts. Members of a Community Group should collaborate with other members from the same Community Group to combine collected cigarette butts. Only one entry per Educational Establishment or Community Group will be accepted.
Requirements: To enter the competition, you must first register your interest with GreenSeas Trust using the contact form on our website or by email. Entrants are required to collect as many discarded cigarette butts as they can from their local beach or coastal area in 1-litre plastic bottles. Entrants should submit a photograph of all filled or part-filled plastic bottles via email. The winner will be the entrant who has filled the most plastic bottles with cigarette butts collected from their local
beach or coastal waterfront area.
Runtime: The competition will run from Monday 3 February to Friday 9 May 2025. Photographs of filled bottles must be sent to GreenSeas Trust by 5pm on Friday 16 May.
Prize: The Educational Establishment or Community Group which has collected the most cigarette butts in 1-litre bottles will win a dolphin neon sign, donated by Neon Filter. Only 1 prize is available.
Winner: The winner will be announced by Friday 30 May 2025.
Regulations: By entering the competition, the Educational Establishment or Community Group and the individuals taking part from such Educational Establishment or Community Group acknowledge compliance with the following competition regulations:
All entries are submitted free of charge.
Only one entry per Educational Establishment or Community Group will be accepted.
In consideration of the opportunity to take part in the competition, the individual who took the photograph(s) referred to in paragraph 4 and, to the extent necessary, their Educational Establishment or Community Group, hereby:
grant the trustees of the GreenSeas Trust a non-exclusive, irrevocable licence to reproduce, enlarge, publish or exhibit, the images submitted for the full period of copyright in those images, in any media throughout the world, for any purpose to further the aims and objectives of GreenSeas Trust;
waive in favour of the trustees of the GreenSeas Trust and all of their assignees and successors in title all moral rights in the images submitted to which such individual (and, to the extent necessary, their Educational Establishment or Community Group) may be entitled under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 as amended from time to time to the extent necessary for the trustees of the GreenSeas Trust to exploit such images to further the aims and objectives of GreenSeas Trust;
agree that the photograph(s) submitted can be shared across all social media platforms;
acknowledge and confirm that the photograph(s) submitted do(es) not infringe any applicable laws and regulations, including data protection law, rights of privacy, rights of publicity or any other intellectual property rights and other rights of any person or entity and that no other party has any right, title, claim or interest in the photograph(s) submitted and such individual (and, to the extent necessary, their Educational Establishment or Community Group) agrees that they shall immediately inform the
trustees of the GreenSeas Trust if they become aware of any such right, title, claim or interest;
acknowledge and confirm that if any photograph(s) submitted include images of any other person(s), such person(s) have given their consent to be featured in such photograph(s) for the above purposes and such individual (and, to the extent necessary, their Educational Establishment or Community Group) agrees that they shall immediately inform the trustees of the GreenSeas Trust if they become aware of any such person(s) withdrawing their consent; and
confirm that the photograph(s) submitted shall not violate the intellectual property rights and other rights of whatsoever nature in any materials produced.
The decision on the winning entry is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Navigating beaches and coastal areas can be physically challenging and may carry with it risks that the organisers of this
competition, being the trustees of the Greenseas Trust, (the “Organisers”) cannot entirely eliminate.
In the absence of any negligence or any breach of duty by the Organisers, participation in this competition is entirely at your own risk and the Organisers shall not accept liability for claims arising as a result of your participation in this competition.
Such risks include (but are not limited to) sea hazards (including drowning), exposure to strong winds and other challenging weather conditions, exposure to coastal shrapnel and sharp objects, risks associated with physical exertion, and risks associated with handling cigarette butts.
Entrants must consider their own safety and the safety of others while participating in this competition and are strongly advised to have regard to the following rules:
You must act responsibly and sensibly at all times having regard to the dangers of being near the sea.
You must not participate in this competition if you are pregnant.
You must not participate in this competition if you are under the influence of alcohol or non-prescription drugs.
You must adhere strictly to any safety warnings, instructions, posters or signs displayed at the beach and coastal locations.
In case of any doubt as to your physical condition you must seek advice from your doctor before participating, as the Organisers are not qualified to express an opinion that any entrant is physically fit and safe to participate.
